Taxing Clothing Sales in SL

In today’s Toronto Globe & Mail newspaper, there is an article about the Canadian Revenue Agency (the Canadian equivalent of the IRS) going to court to force eBay to produce a list of the names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of all high-volume sellers. The tax man wants his share.

Both Canadian residents and U.S. citizens are required to report their income to the income tax authorities, whether from employment or a home business. It doesn’t matter to the tax man whether the money was earned in your first or second life.

There is an important distinction between eBay and Second Life however. According to the article, Canadians spend $1.25 billion on real products on eBay, much more than on virtual products on Second Life. However, if SL grows that large, watch out! The taxman will come knocking here as well, and will be just as unlikely to accept the argument that the information is stored on a server outside of its jurisdiction.

Miss Diva Style – KandieKane

Our warmest congratulations go out to KandieKane Laval, the winner of MODA Modeling School’s Miss Diva Style competition. KandieKane wowed our judges in several categories, including her pose selections, overall look, and presence on the runway.

“I’m just happy to be here,” enthused KandieKane as she accepted her tiara from Noelle Canning, the event organizer. “I’m so proud to be representing such a wonderful designer as Honeydew Hilite.”

KandieKane beat out 9 other contestants after being narrowed down first to 5 runners-up and then 3 finalists.

KandieKain Laval is a native New Yorker with the urge to shop. Her favorite place, before she discovered Diva Style, was Solange. Her most embarrassing moment came during an SL crash when her hair ended up between her knees and she shrunk to midget size. Actually Kandy, you’re not alone. That happens to everyone in SL.

KandieKain is seen here wearing her second outfit of the evening. No Diva can be without her little black dress and here we have KandieKane modeling a slinky little number. The Black Wave Dress is seductive with its deep v neckline and see-through wave cut trim. The wide diamante belt helps to show of those sexy diva curves. This outfit also includes a stunning diamond brooch.

Our lucky winner was not only crowned Miss Diva Style 2007, but was the recipient of a fantastic prize package. The prizes are a year of Diva Style clothing, a Year Contract to model for Diva Style and to represent Diva Style in ads and on the runway plus a scholarship to MODA and L$1000.

Our other two finalists were Payton Heron and Arienne Anatine.
Arienne was our first runner-up, and is seen here wearing the figure hugging Navy Blue Suit Dress. The hemline of the skirt features a white waved trim that exposes just a little leg, who says you can’t mix business with pleasure! This stylish dress comes with two shirt options – a short sleeved version or the long sleeved which has matching wave trims. The outfit is completed with a thin white belt.

Payton is here in a cute Black Turtle Neck Dress. This dress is sexy yet demure showing off your curves and still leaving alot to the imagination. The waistline is accented with a cute gold belt and the dress has a full prim skirt which ends just above knee length.
Congratulations also go out to Payton Heron, winner of our Most Photogenic award and to Tweetie Ferraris, winner of our Miss Congeniality award. Both Payton and Tweetie received full scholarships to MODA Modeling School and $500L.

Everyone in the competition worked her heart out and did a fantastic job, and looked amazing. They’re all winners in our book here at MODA and we hope to see them in future events.

Lissa Maertens of CATTIVA and CATTIVO is making herself known as a talented designer. She has some exciting new designs and ask me to review a few of them. I was more than happy to do it. CATTIVA and CATTIVO offers fashions for men and women from casual to formal. Take a look at some of her designs below:

Cattiva Foldover Women’s suit comes in Aged Ivory and Navy. The suit is impressive with lots of detail from the pants leg cuff, pockets, lapel and buttons. The Aged Ivory and Navy make a great mix and match set as I have shown here.

Lissa’s Jailbird Black dress can be worn in multiple ways to suite your mood. The Jailbird Cocktail Dress includes a flexi skirt, cocktail top and cocktail bottom featuring a horizontal stripe pattern. Dress it up or play it down, make it punk. This dress is fun.

Creativity and SL Music

Adding a DJ to our fashion shows has made a world of difference at MODA. They bring excitement as they customize the music to fit the show. They add to the mood as they describe the models and what they are wearing. At MODA we do everything we can to encourage and contribute to the creativity of Second Life.

While not a fashionista, Cher Harrington is also contributing to creativity in SL by broadcasting an all Second Life Live Artist station http://209.164.64.247:8008, which is currently streaming songs from artists such as Charles Coleman, Frogg Marlowe and Jaycatt Nico, Rich Desoto, Mel Cheeky, Ronnie Carr, Virtual Live Band, Hep Shepherd, Smily Raymaker, Kurt Jano, Melvin Took, Soundcircl, Silas Scarborough, UFS Hyde, Blue4U, Kaklik Martin, Lyndon Heart, and more!

The SL Live Artist station runs 24/7. A Creative Commons license is available for viewing at myspace.com/radiocher. It is commercial-free and it is her way of giving back to the SL Live Music Community. If you are a Second Life Live Artist and would like to submit songs to Radio Cher, please email them in mp3 format to cher_sl[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Thanks, Cher!!

Alchemy – Gowns for Girls

The other day I was tping around, following a fun trail of fashion notices, when I came upon a delightful store called Alchemy. I had only spent a few minutes at the store when the owner, Constanza Volare appeared. She asked about my skin and said she was doing a makeover for a friend.

As with all the SL fashion designers I have met, I love learning about the person behind the designs. Constanza was very open and provided a lot of information about herself. She is a London-based graphic designer in RL and she came to SL because she “read there was the possibility of creating content and that seemed very interesting to me and decided to check it out”.

At the moment, Alchemy produces beautiful gowns and evening wear, like the one I am wearing, called Serendipity. I love the chocolate color, the flirty, girly layers of white peeking out from under the skirt and how the dress moves when I walk. Constanza is definitely influenced by her Chilean ancestry and she is not afraid of vibrant color, as you will notice when you visit the store.

The store itself is worth a mention, it’s minimalist and spacious, so no bumping into grey, unrezzed, lag-inducing displays. Look out for a framed picture in the corner on a table, turns out it’s a picture of Constanza’s mum, also a designer in RL. Alchemy is working on a casual line for women and intends to branch out into men’s wear in the not too distant future. Alchemy also sells shoes by Isobel DeSantis of Angels, made specifically to match Alchemy gowns. Look for a possible feature on Alchemy in one of our regular spotlights or showcases.

Dress: Serendipity in Chocolate by Alchemy
Skin: Minnu dark skingloss-nature
Shoes: Charlotte by X3D
Hair: Eva II in Ebony by ETD

Miss Diva Style Photoshoot

Noelle Canning is one of MODA’s top models. As such she is not eligible for the Miss Diva Style contest. However, she would make a fine spokesperson for Second Skin!

Wandering the gardens outside of Diva Style – to be the location for the upcoming Miss Diva Style Competition Photoshoot. I couldn’t resist shooting some pics myself – love love love tulips – my fav flower. Felt like a big kid playing in the fountain. :)
